As someone who grew up & started their music career in the mid 90"s (Golden Era / Boom Bap HipHop) I"ve had a large portion of my long term supporters as well as new listeners stumbling on my earlier works who adore and wish I would keep creating music of the same style from those early years. This pertains to Beats (Dutchyyy) & (Rhymes)

Reality is, from the very beginning I"ve always been making music that didn"t fit into any specific genre since I don"t just listen or draw inspiration from a single genre.  While most of my music is rooted in the fundamentals of traditional hip hop / beat making.  I"ve always gravitated towards creating instrumentals that can speak for me, that aren"t meant for people to put vocals over. Just genuine self expression minus the pressures of how that art will be received by others.

This external pressure reached an all time high 2012-2014 with supporters getting frustrated I wasn"t releasing new music rapping, and even more so that the Instrumentals I were releasing, weren"t your typical hip hop beats (sidenote: funny years later my style would become a whole genre, branded "Lofi-HipHop")  

After moving from Los Angeles, back to Tampa Bay and then Immediately to NY in 2014, I reunited with my pops after over a decade of having no communication.

My Pop"s saw the pressure fans were putting on me and how I was torn between trying to please strangers and wanting to escape the boxes I was always being shoved in and told me that since I was a child, I always marched to the beat of my own drum and never cared what anyone else thought, a trait I inherited from both of Parents as we are all a tad "out there" he told me to ignore all the outside noise and let go, Because the view is better and much more rewarding when truly existing "Off In Our Own World"

Backstory:

This was created, mixed and mastered in Ableton Live within a 1 hour time limit beat battle verses my homie DJ (PeaceOutPremiere) using only a Single Studio Monitor (speaker) i.e. Mono =/

Created on February 26th 2016 while very briefly living at DJ"s crib in Tampa, FL shortly after releasing the digital version of Traversal and a few months prior to moving back to Los Angeles while finalizing the Cassette Version of Traversal.

Everyone seemed to Love this track and begged me to put it on the cassette version of Traversal,  but I declined due to not being happy with the quick mix/master of track and not wanting to revisit the session after the fact to clean it up.

Still it remains a loose track created during the "Traversal" Arc of my Life,  So even though it wasn"t a part of the digital or cassette version.  I still lump it with "Traversal" in my head.

Fun Fact: 

Since it was initially released (uploaded to soundcloud right after export) at least 20 people have messaged me over the years saying they didn"t realize the beat has a hidden change up at the end and asked why I sequenced it in a way where it sounds like the track ends before slowly fading back into the final change up and that no DJ would ever have a chance to include the best part of the beat in their set because of this.

My response was and always is,  I don"t make music for DJs, I make music for people like me who lost their minds hearing hidden Pete Rock Interludes after songs....    I.E.  intentionally unconventionally always trying to reward to the patient ear =)

Backstory:

Created late 2015 in Tampa, FL after multiple sour encounters with much younger, very entitled and ignorant (at the time) artists.  I"ve always done my best to inspire and mentor the next generation but won"t hesitate to check them when they are acting foul.  Everyone enjoys praise and encouragement, but not everyone handles being told when you are disappointed in them.  Felt like a Generational thing at the time, because growing up all my best relationships were with people that just kept it 100%,  I can"t imagine cutting off my homies who always looked out for me based on them disagreeing with me or calling me out when I needed it.  I don"t know, Maybe the Golden Era of Boom Bap / Battle Rap made for thicker skin and not taking constructive critique personally or to heart. Either way, there was just too many back to back encounters that made me feel like having a rational conversation was falling on deaf ears, so I just expressed and emoted via song =)

Most of those younger cats have grown up, apologized and mended bridges thankfully.  For the ones who held onto resentment, it"s all love on my end. <3

Back Story:

This session started on 1-6-2019 during my 1st 10 hour live stream on twitch, where my chat provided the sample for me to flip.

Probably one of my favorite beats of all time and I still haven"t exported a final or normal version of it, because I made way too many change ups and have revisited and evolved/devolved the session countless times since then. (see album cover)

The last saved version in ableton was 8.6.21

but this specific version was created at the end of January 2022 as I revisited the project file one last time and Evolved a new Portal in real time on i.g. live.  

So this audio only exists because I was capturing the audio via Re-sample on the SP-404,  and I didn"t even start recording from the beginning.   I do believe I have the full session in Video form tho.  If I can find it, It will to documented in the "Evolving Portals" collection below:

Backstory:

Shortly after leaving Sam's Point Nature Preserve where I was living w/ my pops in Upstate New York...

After scrambling to find a temporary residence w/ little to no notice about the state taking over the private nature preserve where my pops was living as the caretaker the prior 10 years and replacing him w/ a park ranger.   We briefly landed in the guest house of one of my pop friends.  By guest house, I mean a singular large room, w/ hallway for storage (where I slept and set up my equipment)..  This place was literally like 5 minutes away from Sam's Point, so we were still on the Mountain and the scenery was beautiful.   The guest house had a nice wooden front porch, surrounded by trees.  So instead of working on music in basically a closet, I would always wake up, go out on the porch, have some coffee, roll a spliff and set up my Laptop hooked to my little JBL bluetooth speaker and work on music first thing...

Winter on the mountain would usually begin in October and last through early May, so this particular morning, I woke up to a freshly fallen snow covered winter wonderland view.   I was working on tracks for my upcoming album "Traversal" (which I didn't know would be the album title until months later after moving back to Tampa, FL again) and instead of going into unfinished projects, I wanted to create something with new energy that matched the beautiful morning winter scenery...  

I loaded up drums that my friend and fellow beat scene legend "Howie Wonder" sent me to collab over, and dug through my vault looking for a specific sample I saved to flip when the right moment came....Which just happened to be shortly after sun rise on April 2rd, 2015 on the front porch of this guest house. =)

I began flipping the main beat first, watching as the sun melted away that freshy dusted winter wonderland until I got pulled away shortly after for the rest of day/night...  

The next afternoon I woke up, ready to continue where I left off the previous day, Walked outside and saw zero traces of snow.  Being me, I stubbornly decided I was going to hold off on working on the track until the winter wonderland vibe returned.  I opened up Ableton Live, loaded up another sample I've been hoarding and posted it to I.G. quizzing if anyone could guess the sample.

 ADHD kicked in, when I saw the cat's enjoying the absence of snow, rolling around on the grass and I walked out to film them.  which made me think, as much as I wished it was still a winter land, It seems the cat's are grateful to be able to explore the yard again.

Guess what?

That was the final snow I would see,  Winter Wonderland never returned haha...  Shortly after, we moved from that guest house and into the basement of a new house (also a few minutes away)  but this house was amazing, and the owner was never home,  so it's like we had this amazing house to ourselves....  

and on July 7th, 2015, I would say goodbye to New York for a bit and head back once again to the place I kept trying to escape, Tampa Bay.

I began working on "Traversal" upon arrival in Tampa,  but guess what you will never find in Tampa Bay, Florida?  

A Winter Wonderland...

and I'm artistically stubborn...    No Snow,  No finishing the track..... So the first version of Traversal was released and this song was not included on it as intended.

In April 2016, I moved back to Los Angeles (No Snow) and began finalizing the Cassette version of "Traversal",  Still stubborn...   It was not included on the tape as intended...      

August 19th 2016. my mother passed away, the same day I was fired from netflix for posting a picture at my work desk on twitter,  a few days later....     I'm back in Tampa Bay once again...  tho with zero intentions of staying...  (hindsight is 20/20)  

It took me a while after my mother passed to be able to bring myself to work on music.  

According to my own lore, the first time I touched music again was with this quick impromptu tribute to my mom I made on December 8th, 2016 which I posted on soundcloud with no track title, or intentions of keeping public.

I opened one project shortly after arriving in Tampa after my mother passed...

A project I was too stubborn to work on unless the perfect conditions lined up... Something I learned the hard way is that tomorrow is never promised.  So I opened up the Howie Wonder Collab in tribute,  No snow in sight, and attached new energy to this track....     The first time opening up Ableton since my mother passed, and I created the intro......    I realized in that moment my energy was too chaotic and off balance and I wasn't ready to return to creating music just yet.      

I added the new intro, added the brief interlude and attached them to the original beat,  No Winter Wonderland in sight,  but in spite of all the loss, and traversing, I had hope and optimism.....

and on September 3rd, 2016, I uploaded the track to Soundcloud with the description:

"Everything is going to be o.k."

Backstory:

Remember back when everyone thought the world was going to end on December 21st 2012?  I do haha.  If you"re reading this in the distant future and have no idea what I"m talking about, search your history archives for the Mayan Calendar Apocalypse.

I woke up on December 22nd 2012, in my San Pedro Apartment, overlooking the Port of Los Angeles, and smiled.  Felt it was only right to celebrate by quickly cooking up in Ableton Live to document the historic moment.  

Super quick flip,  Immediately, uploaded to Soundcloud the moment I finished with the description reading "APOCALYPSE AVERTED IDDISH."

Backstory:

On January 26th 2023, while trying to test out if my new PC could handle playing music, while gaming using my virtual avatar a critical user error was made.

New PC, new methods. For this test all I needed was a playlist of my own music in the windows default media player but I wasn"t familiar with the one that came installed w/ my pc "Groove Music". It wouldn"t let me drag and drop music into playlists, songs had to be imported and by mistake I chose to import my entire F drive (which was the main External SSD that held all my Ableton Live Project Files, Drums, Samples, Album Masters, Unreleased. Basically my master vault.

As soon as I clicked on that drive it began importing every single media file on that SSD (over 16k files to be exact) including drum one shots, everything....  Not ideal for what I was attempting to quickly test out,  which was just create a mini playlist of my curated music to stream to. I wasn"t trying to sort through 16k files so I just [shift] selected all and deleted everything that was just imported so I could just import a specific folder instead. When I went to create a specific folder in my External SSD, I noticed all the audio files were gone. I panicked, and quickly checked my trash and saw everything I deleted from the playlist in groove music was removed from my SSD and placed into the trash, so I quickly restored the files but realized almost everything was still missing. Then I saw the recycling bin had a storage limit, one that greatly exceeded and after research learned that the largest files that couldn"t fit were permanently deleted. 

I"m now in full blown meltdown mode. I consider myself somewhat computer savvy but hours and hours of research on how I could possibly recover my life"s work were a bust. Every page, video, forum all pointed to paid recovery software and I couldn"t tell what was legit or not so I took to twitter and sent out an S.O.S. Flare...

The homie Alez reached out and offered to pay for the recovery software, and I spent the next 12 hrs, watching this software slowly move its progress bar.  The problem was, there was no way to recover files lost from the External SSD back on to the same SSD drive, so I had to set the recovery path to D: drive which is my 10TB disc hard drive.  The SSD was only 1TB, but when the software finally finished it said it recovered 2.7 TB worth of data...  I still don"t understand this.....

While I was able to recover a majority of the audio files, most were recovered with different, incoherent file names. So all of those Ableton Live Project Files had no way of finding where any of the samples or drums were located. This absolutely decimated my spirit since there were like 7 project files I never even exported a rough version of and they were all the music I was most excited and proud of, now forever lost.

Within the same 24 hrs as this happened, on my 52nd hour of not sleeping, I got an email from Catalog asking If I wanted to be the next artist to submit samples for the upcoming Cook Off 008...     Crazy timing huh?    

I accepted, but explained the situation that just happened and said I would do my best. I just lost access to all my Ableton Project Files, 2019-2022 so all the new stuff I would have loved to submit, so I ended up using my laptop and hooked up on old drive and dug into every project file I didn"t recognize...  and began exporting chops, loops, drums of stuff I barely remembered making.

By the time I was finished I had a 5.26GB Folder with 110 files in it...   The Largest amount of samples submitted for a Cook Off Challenge.

My biggest pet peeve w/ sample challenges is when the artist submits like 3 files, and there is hardly any Harmonic or Melodic diversity to work with, so I made sure I provided enough variation in that folder for people to choose from to make submitting a flip as stress free as possible while in the most stressed state possible at that time haha.   

I"m still feeling the loss from that day, It messed up a lot of planned things in motion that were near completion and I"ve barely made new music this year because of that. I"m very grateful to Alez for reaching out and lending support, I"m very grateful to Catalog for being a Platform that values music and not only holds these creative fun challenges but also participates in nearly all of them. Lastly, I"m thankful to everyone who showed up for my challenge. It was super inspiring hearing so many talented producers putting their own spin on my samples. To this date, Cook Off 008 was the largest turn out in terms of submissions. That definitely makes me smile but I would love to see that record get shattered by more people joining in on future cook offs =)

Back Story:

Created March - October 2015 at Sam"s Point Nature Preserve, i.e. the highest point of the Shawangunk Ridge in Upstate NY.

On September 10th, 2014 the Homie Cazal Organism sent me some drums to get busy over and imo there is nothing like that signature Cazal Bounce when it comes to drums so I wasted zero time.  Immediately opened up Ableton Live and let my expression loose.  At the time,  I was having super in depth conversations with multiple people about how unfulfilling surface based interactions, convos and even art was for our spirits.  It felt like so many people were so closed off and guarded, playing it safe in so many aspects of life.      How boring.....

The track creation process wasn"t like my usual tunnel vision process,  I was multitasking multiple songs at the time,  and building tracks over time.   Around April 2015, I ended up sending the 1st draft ableton session to Cazal so he could add some bass over my micro chops.  After I got the session back, I added keys, synths, more bass and got super weird with it.  The version you are hearing is the Digital Release Version, which varies slightly from the Cassette version of Traversal.  Different mix, master, some additions, subtractions were made and that quiet gap towards the end of the track was filled with what I intentionally made open space for.

Backstory:

Created fall 2009 in Tampa, Florida using FL STUDIO.

I guess I always made super long tracks looking back hahaha.  A least they had a million change ups 95% of the time.  If I were to have to point out my own weakest trait in terms of music production I guess it"s always been basslines.   Maybe it"s from always creating in cheap headphones for the 1st 20 years of making beats and not be able to ever play music loud enough to feel the bass where i was creating or maybe never taking the time to learn music theory was not the best move.  I feel like my ear excels in term of creating melodies and harmonies without training, but basslines I just never seemed prioritize.   Imperfection is spirit animal I guess =)

Not a lot of memories attached to certain older beats,  probably means I was just getting lost having fun creating in the moments I could find.
