She Who Sees The Unknown (20212022) is a research-based project, which uses 3D modeling, 3D scanning, 3D printing, and storytelling to re-create monstrous female/queer figures of Middle Eastern origin, using the traditions and myths associated with them to explore the catastrophes of colonialism, patriarchism, and environmental degradation in relation to the Middle East. MAJLIS AL-JINN: Huma, a chapter of She Who Sees The Unknown, includes a 3D rendering video of Huma, a jinn known in various Middle Eastern tales as a demon who brings heat to the human body and earth. She is pictured as a demon with three heads and one or two tails depending on her illustration in different manuscripts. In addition to this video, the work presented on Feral File includes a selection of Islamic manuscripts and archival materials.

MAJLIS AL-JINN: Huma + The Archive #10

This is not love. This is sex. Shu Lea Cheangs feature-length cyberpunk sci-fi porn film I.K.U. (2000) tells the story of the internet porn enterprise Genom Corporation that dispatches I.K.U. coders to collect orgasm data, developing the ability to sell profitable and addictive on-demand orgasms. I.K.U. is a phenomenon that wants to refuse definition . As much trans-genre as it is trans-gender, I.K.U. also wants to merge video and film into a fresh digital universe large-scale enough to overwhelm the viewer. In conjunction with the film release, Cheang created an interactive website called Expand, an interface (2001) with stills from I.K.U. Using horizontally expanding and glitching panels to reveal I.K.U. coders such as Reiko or Tokyo Rose, Expand, an interface challenges the censorship in cinema versus online. The website is no longer online, and this screen recording was recaptured by Shu Lea Cheang in 2022, alongside stills from the film as well as the interface.

CRAWL

_CRAWL_ is a series of 512 unique artworks, each generated from a Python-code system authored by Travess Smalley. Each artwork is a level to be explored, and includes different patterns, colors, and textures. The core of each artwork is a map image, but the artwork is also the way the image is revealed to the viewer through Smalleys custom-built explorer software. Viewers can sit back and watch the software perform itself, or they can navigate directly with a keyboard. While exploring, different colors within the image trigger different events. Each level has a door icon, as well as other features to discover all of which reveal new ways to explore. Each _CRAWL_ artwork is one level. If you collect multiple _CRAWL_ artworks, they can be merged into a new artwork that contains all the levels in your collection. For instance, if 24 individual levels are collected, those artworks can be combined into a unique 1/1 software artwork featuring all 24 levels, and the original single-layer artworks are burned. After a merge, icons embedded into each level map enable the collector to move between levels. Polyarrythmia is an album or an exhibition or a selection of pieces, or maybe just a narrative in sound. None of the compositions have a strict metronome; there is no click or clock. The album as a whole has interlocking peaks, micro-moments and movements, and then larger arcs, which meet and then disperse. To me, that is very much what rhythm is, thus the name Polyarrythmia.

Polyarrythmia could be a musical. The whole record has this cabaret connotation, with the sounds doing odd things, stepping up or doing a weird little trick, or waving its hand and having a mustache. It can also be perceived symphonically, an orchestra of unknown instruments. After all, maybe we still have to figure out what sound is. Maybe it helps to reconsider that idea. Hopefully some people will experience this exhibition not just as sound-based, but as something physical as well, a reconsideration of perceptual signal flow. Jan St. Werner

Superbloom" by Elsif captures the ephemeral floral beauty of spring on the Pacific Coast. An experiment in creating 144 individual artworks that connect together, with each piece flowing seamlessly into the next, inviting you on an endless walk through a meadow by the sea. 

Memorys nostalgia is presented as the peaceful calm of an ocean breeze flows over the flowers and grass. The art style transitions between clear geometric shapes and loose painterly strokes, which heightens the appreciation of the knowledge that Superbloom" is created with code rather than a paintbrush. The influence of traditional Chinese art shines through in the continuous landscape, the elegant movement of calligraphic brushes echoing in the implied movement across the horizon.

Elsif worked directly with the themes of the exhibition, choosing to create a continuous piece that pulls at the threads of connection and the fluid exchange of ideas.

The way I think visually is with lines  its very simple, and very quick; its similar to drawing diagrams. But for this piece I was drawing circles, and though its still the simple instruction of a circle, I also added a level of transparency that I hadnt used before. The content of the circle becomes transparent over the spreading out, the further you get from the center. With this piece I also wanted to play with the idea of emptiness and things being filled up and busy. Theres constantly a tension between where you feel like theres some space and where it feels very crowded. The script is simple: its just these circles moving from the center outward, getting bigger. Theyre not moving towards you, but there is a false sense of depth, like moving through clouds. Ive always liked the kinds of paintings where you're suggesting depth, but its barely there. Feral File  Infinite Entropy

Infinite Entropy is a series of 25 unique works, each one with its own colors, rhythm, and scale. The script is relatively simple: colorful circles drift from the center of the composition outward, getting bigger as they go. The dense concentration of color at the center of each circle gets more transparent as the circle spreads, creating a soft halo that gives the piece a layered, fuzzy feel. The overall effect is quite different from Rafael Rozendaals usual harder-edged works, though the process of building it from simple shapes and small steps is the same. The circles look as if theyre moving toward the viewer, implying depth where there is none.
