Soulection+ is the Web3 extension of our company and culture. Its where we as a community of creatives and supporters will experiment with art & music on the blockchain. 

Soulection+ Radio: Untitled 001 is our GENESIS Web3 radio show, brought to you in partnership with Sound. After over a decade of using our Soulection Radio platform to share & support the music we love, we are excited to finally be able to break bread with artists on a mix - and share the earnings from the project in real time! 

This Soulection+ Radio mix features all of our great artists who have been essential to the Soulection legacy over the past 11 years. Many of the artists on this mix have never released anything on Web3. We truly appreciate their trust and willingness to experiment with us. Part of our goal as an entity is to make it easy for the creatives we support to comfortably explore how art & music can intertwine with blockchain technologies, and carve a lane for themselves to travel forward independently as they see fit. 

This radio show is curated and mixed by Joe Kay, the recording is approximately 62 minutes, and contains unreleased gems from our closest friends and family.

When the pandemic hit in 2020 the scope of music changed.

Many artists and creatives didn't know how much it would impact us beyond not being able to do shows but it really forced us to be inside and reflect. This alone can kill creativity because many of us thrive off of the outside experiences in life.

However, I saw it as an opportunity to push myself to hone my skills. Not just as a writer and rapper but also as a visionary. I took upon myself to start a freewrite series called "The Takes" where every track had a beat switch and every title had a number next to it that was significant in meaning (I love numbers and codes that have hidden meanings).

This mint is also special because it was the last track I recorded before I evolved into my current gold bearded state (haha).

The limited resolution forced me to edit my photos past the point of recognition. Yet, I soon realized that I liked what I saw. Now that I"ve found my footing in crypto and NFTs, I"ve compiled years of artwork into this collection. Each piece is a warped photograph, twisted from a memory within my life story. A lot of these final images embrace the power of sisterhood and the acceptance of change. As the sun grew high, I knew that shooting in harsh light wouldnt be ideal; however, shooting on film in harsh light is very different. I first shot two of the models together while one was taking a short break. I loved the pose so much that I wanted them all to group together, very close as if they were hugging and I snapped the shot. 
It was very difficult to have these women maneuver around that close with the angel wings, and I can't lie that there were moments where I wanted to take the wings off and just photoshop them in, but it wouldnt have looked or even felt the same if we did that.

So after working with a publishing label that was treating me like I was a slave, I got stuck in form and this idea that songwriting has to be one way, I took some time to heal because I really couldnt write for months. To help, I decided to ride my bike to clear my head, and one day I envisioned myself rapping a verse on the L.A. River. And thats how Joyride came to life. 

Joyride is an evolving practice of free verses that are straight to it. No form, just me and me philosophies in bars. Its a meditation, its short bits of me, its whatever you want to make it. An opportunity to just allow myself to ride the beat. To create these verses, I would start with a beat I love, rap on it and then send the accapella to Kaui to create something new out of it.

Culture, this first offering/verse off of Joyride came to me after rapping on Kaytranadas production. I wrote the verse in a nite and immediately knew I didnt want to add much else to it. I am very lyrical and I am realizing, sometimes one verse is enough. Sometimes keeping it simple is all you need. Sometimes just riding your own path is what I have to do. 

So this year as Im riding my path, I guess Im using this Joyride as an exercise in getting back to me, getting out of my way, sticking to my journey, continuing to create with bro Kaui who has been working with me for years, Im really excited for how this ride will take me to more paths. Affirmations and sound healing are a big part of my creative and wellness practice as an artist. After spending 7 months in Jamaica with my mom, my cup was filled with so much love, peace, and joy that I had no choice but to share the overflow. The videos I created were invited people to affirm themselves & Repeat After Me, and day by day my community made their way to me. After seeing the immense response across all platforms, I was inspired to write a song. 

This song was inspired by the abundance of love I present in my family. The lyric "I am loved eternally" emphasizes my relationship with God and the love I get to experience from the most high, my family and my ancestors. My time in Jamaica allowed me to heal so I poured it into a record. I teamed up with my brother AJ to create a melody that sonically healed listeners third eye chakra (A), root chakra (C) and heart chakra (F). After settling on the melody, I hit up my brother Proda to take the song to the next level with production and he ended up fusing nature, space sounds and drill elements to create the world of Affirmation. Creating this art was a labor of love, it wouldnt have been possible without community and collaboration. I dedicate this piece to my mother who transitioned in Fall 2021 and know that this song honors the legacy of love she bestowed in me as she continues to watch over me. 

This is my Genesis piece in the NFT space, and it represents what Im about as an artist. I create art to affirm, uplift and encourage myself and others in hopes that they do the same in their respective communities. I hope to connect with and build a community in the space with like-minded artists and collectors who are dedicated to the overall wellness, progression, and sustainability of the artists communities globally. I put my heart in my art and hope that everyone who experiences it can feel the love.

AFFIRMATION

When making the music I love, I tend to keep my head down, and the volume up as music keeps me going. Music has played a significant role in my life, being my primary form of therapy. I was very insecure, introverted, and struggled with social anxiety as a kid. I still, to this day, enjoy my alone time much more than going out with others, but I no longer struggle the way that I used to because of music. 

As always, there comes a time when you have to look up and step out to take yourself to the next level. In doing so, you often receive a lot of pushback from people around you who don"t agree with or understand your vision. This is entirely normal and expected when you"re doing something great. One thing I personally didn"t expect was for others" insecurities and traumas to get in the way of their support for what I do. I recall being very insecure in myself and my craft at one point, and as a result, I studied those that I felt were much better than me. This never made me not want to support what they were doing; It only attracted me more. As I venture deeper into the music industry, I notice that some people will know who you are and what you do but choose to ignore you because they don"t want their shine taken away. This song offers a form of support while also addressing the issue at hand so that we can continue to grow as artists.

The song gives off a fun and groovy vibe to represent my understanding of dancing. I compare the issue to dancing because that"s exactly what it is, a rhythmic (repeated) sequence of steps taken by multiple parties resulting in the form of entertainment. While the matter can be entertaining, the main focus is the conflict that can arise between both parties if they are not on the same rhythm. Insert the title, "Stick and Move," a boxing technique that I consider a dance representing the conflict between both parties. 

In the first verse, I express my interaction with some of these individuals who have slighted me in ways they may not have noticed and how it made me feel. Though it can get to me at times, I tend to be very forgiving and understanding which keeps my confidence up, igniting the fire within. The second verse goes deeper into the issue, explaining my thought process on understanding what"s really happening and how to solve it. Ultimately we all need a little patience. Even when frustrations are high, the conversation can still be had in healthy ways so that we all can thrive and flourish within this industry.
