Sky Scraper Edition

3 miles above NYC in an open-door helicopter has never been done before. So the images that came from this flight are all new to me as well as new to viewer.  This level of awe and wonder is a precious thing for a creator, and I hope that it translates in the imagery.  Here is a north (top of frame) to south view of the island of Manhattan and surrounding environs.  The avenues are pronounced in this orientation, as well as the shadows of the skyline on the Hudson River.  The first of 2 editions in the Sky Scraper series.

Glimmer Of Hope

Lost in her inner thoughts, the weight of her emotions trapped her on a dark path. As she looked into the distance, she caught sight of a ray of light. It was like a beacon of hope in her despair, shining through the darkness that enveloped her. A glimmer of determination stirred within her - an urge to rise above the pain, circumstances, and uncertainty that had weighed her down.  

With tears still fresh on her face, she took a deep breath and steadied herself. The light gave her a moment of relief, a chance to catch her breath and gather her strength. Filled with a renewed sense of significance, love filled her heart. With each breath, she pulled herself together, drawing strength from hope and love. It was fierce, unbreakable love - the kind that conquered even the deepest fears and pains. She rose out of the darkness with renewed faith and a new sense of purpose!

2020 was a unique year in my career as a street photographer. After six months of strict curfews and stern Covid measures as well as vandalism and destruction caused by civil unrest, New York City turned into a desolate shell of its former self. The once bustling metropolis started to look and feel like scenes from a post-apocalyptic movie. As I wandered through the empty streets, normalcy began to slip away. Over time, things slowly improved but it wasnt until a cold and snowy night in December that the city felt alive again.

This photograph represents a city reborn and is a personal reminder of my experiences during darker times. Wandering the empty streets I no longer recognized while trying to remember what how things once were.

What goes on behind the windows of our lives? We often fail to appreciate what others are going through in their personal lives, its all too easy to judge or even be judged. Its important that we slow down and consider what someone may be going through in their own journey before we form our opinions. When shooting the Windows project, I was able to meet and talk with over 70% of the people and families who look out of these windows every day and even I was guilty of making certain assumptions about them. What I found, was the people I met were always very different to my expectations.

About the Artist: Jordan Banks is a travel and documentary photographer from the UK whose career spans more than two decades and has won multiple awards for his work including the National Geographic Cities Photographer of the year. Jordan regularly shoots for top publications such as National Geographic, BBC, Lonely Planet &amp; The Times as well as being the subject of Sky Arts documentaries on his photography that have been syndicated worldwide. Jordan has shot international campaigns for clients such British Airways, Microsoft, Dropbox, Panasonic and many others.
