Diamond Exhibition

Underneath our sealed skin is an incomprehensible darkness that reaches to the bone. Umbra is a term used to describe the dark inner shadow our moon casts during an eclipse. Our bodies create an umbra, casting an inward shadow that propagates (like good soil) the light we create and project into the outer world. Our hands are agents of this umbra within, and here hold totems of the four elements: earth, water, fire, air.

Evolving Pixels is an exhibition centered around the theme of growth. The show invites a set of diverse digital artists who work with computational technologiesnamely, generative or AI-assistedto investigate what growth means to them. 

PROOF has partnered with Art Blocks and Venus Over Manhattan to bring Evolving Pixels to life. The long-form generative collections in the exhibition are being delivered with the Art Blocks Engine. From April 12-24, Venus Over Manhattan will display Evolving Pixels at their Soho gallery in New York City.

 is a series of generative artworks inspired by Ernst Haeckels illuminating illustrations on biological evolutions. Combining the visual language of microscopic organisms and flowers, the Lycorises artworks aim to represent the intricacies of life and how it constantly evolves.  
Each color palette reflects the unique structure of  specifically evolved in its environments, including the volcano, alien desert, or cyberspace.  These environments encouraged the growth of characteristic features, such as spikes, feathers, and leaves, that protect the Lycoris seed.

The Swahili word SAFARI means "journey," and derives from the Arabic SAFAR meaning "trip," "tour," or "travel.

The series SAFAR was made in southern and central Africa during the last decade. Experiencing different cultures and their relationshipwith the world that surroundsthem has been an education in conservation and preservation, politics, economics, and the struggles between manmade and naturaldisasters.

Along the way, one must learn the linguistic differences between Zulu and Xhosa, Kenyan Swahili and Zanzibari Swahili; use whatever working knowledge can be mustered of French and Portuguese; figuring out the exchange rates between Zambian Kwachaand TanzanianShillings; most of all, ignoring fear when flying in two-seat propellor planes, riding in a rundown 4x4 truck, on horseback, or simply walking among wild animals...

These images weremade in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda. The intention was to show the historical and cultural relationship between the wild and the domesticated, tradition and progress. They don't show a utopian landscape free of human intervention, but rather a land in conflict with progress. These images are about the clash between tradition and economics. They portray cultures deeply affected by colonialism and corruption, and a resilient environment inhabited by people and animals fighting to survive. There is beauty to be seen, if one pauses for long enough so it can reveal itself.

LA Love Letter explores the beauty of women and nature through the lens of the city I call home. Los Angeles encapsulates beauty, mystery, and supernatural energy. Towering palms are ballerinas and watchtowers, circling ravens are wise messengers. Hazy blue daytime skies fade to peach, and then to dusk's burnt orange, before the nocturnal lavender holds steady til dawn.  In its wide reach, Los Angeles stretches to the charming haunt of the desert, the serenity and seclusion of the mountains, and the beaches' rhythmic tides. It is worlds within worlds.  

The best way for me to understand and honor the city is to work with divine feminine spirits, otherworldly women who symbolize and reflect it. Collaborating with my sitters, we create visual portals into private, and emotional, spiritual worlds.  It's an honor to be given this access, and I accept the responsibility with gratitude.

Jenim by Orr Kislev & Alona Rodeh

Initially worn by miners and cowboys, roughly half of the worlds population wears denim on a given day, and the range of styles isliterallyendless. A new pair of jeans might be acid bleached, sandblasted, stonewashed, or tie-dyed; it can have hand-sanded rips and tears, followed by visible mendings, patches, intentional paint stains, and more. In an epic attempt to crack the genetic code of denim, Jenim playfully but carefully observes and translates the warp and weft of denim into generative code, weaving unique iterations of irregular, distorted, or hyper-realistic textile crops.

Ironically, imitating aging, a pair of jeans produced today generates more pollution and labor than most average garments. In response, Jenims minted iterations go beyond wearables and into infinity. Each year that passes, the color might fade slightly; the rips might expand. Who knows what these artworks will look like ten or even fifty years from now?

Divergence by Loren Bednar

DIVERGENCE
Divergence, a never-ending abstract motion work, reacts to audio and touch inputs.  Dive into stacks of deterministic layers to explore emerging patterns, and fine-tune the audio reactivity to your preferences.  

You may wish to use the controls to wander within Divergence until the aesthetic feels right to you, or complements your audio input.  Navigating the art in this way gives a tangible window into my artistic process.  My aesthetic is influenced by the music I listen to as I code. I enjoy experimenting and looking for the art in the algorithm.  This can mean playing with overarching ideas, but also making many small changes until I find consistent visual appeal over a range of outputs.  

Divergence exhibits animations changing over time in expanding, textural layers.  It elaborates on concepts Ive developed in previous works: my approach to color in phase; linear motion in Parade; interlacing lines and expansion/contraction in Kaleidoscope; and the noise textures of Sift.  Newly explored is continuous animation with touch and audio inputs, which affect the viewing position in time and space.  

A common quip in the Art Blocks community is that motion art has a penalty. Many enjoy a final product that is printable to frame at home.  As technology advances, I believe it is equally important to create work that can only exist on a screen, and is unique to digital art. Larger displays are catching up to the artistic space and becoming more accessible, but I also want my work to be approachable immediately.  Keeping the code lean and performant allows it to run well on a range of screen sizes and processor powers, from mobile devices to multi-story displays.  There has been discussion that a body of motion work takes a long time to sift through, as it needs to be viewed live.  In consideration of this, I made Divergence immersive, rather than a static experience. I want the extra time spent with it to be fun and entertaining.  

Usage: Navigate left/right to traverse the timeline; navigate up/down to travel through the layers and expand/contract the patterns. Accessibility is important to me, so Divergence accepts inputs from touch, keyboard, mouse, and gaming controllers with an analog stick.

Two Mathematicians by BY MA

This project explores the highly mathematical world of Islamic geometric patterns.

Islamic design is one of the world"s great artistic traditions, but not much is known about the methods used by artisans in centuries past to construct them. One of the first attempts to formalize the geometry behind Islamic patterns was E.H. Hankin"s seminal 1908 paper "Polygons in Contact", which remains a key technique today. Our project combines the approach described by Hankin with transformations of designs found at real-world historical sites.

Two Mathematicians avoids traditional ornamentation and colouring. It seeks to find beauty in the geometry of the patterns themselves, embellishing only with subtle combinations of basic line and dot shapes. Its two archetypes contrast the precision and order found in Islamic patterns with the informality of a rough draft. In that, it reflects the personalities of its creators, alternating between the obsessive need for order and exactness, and the embrace of just winging it.

PRELUDES by Trevor Paglen

Ive spent much of my career finding and divulging secrets that are hidden in plain sight. In projects that involve tracking down covert CIA operations, analyzing NSA surveillance programs, or dissecting harmful AI systems, Ive always been interested in the numerous methods humans have developed to hide secrets and the ingenious ways others have created to expose them.
 
For the PRELUDES works, I challenged myself to think about how one could hide secrets using the particularities of an entirely on-chain medium. While the blockchains underlying technology, of course, relies on the same types of cryptography used by intelligence agencies, secure banking systems, and other entities, the question of how to hide something in a medium where everything is visible poses a particular type of problem. I went back to my early training as a composer to find an answer.
 
The PRELUDES NFTs are musical compositions that hide secrets. On one hand, theyre inspired by the pioneers of algorithmically generated music such as John Cage and Iannis Xenakis. On the other, theyre inspired by composers such as Michael Haydn, Johannes Brahms, and Olivier Messiaen, who developed systems for encoding messages into their music.
 
Lurking in each of the PRELUDES NFTs is a secret.
