Staccato by Philip Bell

Staccato practices capturing space with elemental geometry. Positive and negative ground dissolve as the eye reads the rows and columns as if distinguishing sheet music. Rhythm emerges from the space between the shapes that tie them together.

The emergent forms of Staccato result from the perception of the collection of shapes as a whole.  High contrast monochrome rendering maximize this psychological effect as the eye groups similar shapes and patterns into subdivisions. 

The process of Staccato stems from letterpress printmaking experiments with decorative typographic material. The process involves filling the letterpress with decorative borders and shapes, inking by hand, pulling a print, inspecting the result, making a small adjustment and repeating.

Six works from the _Placement_ series were on exhibition at the Art Blocks Gallery in Marfa, Texas from May  October, 2022. 

_Placement_ is a series of 500 artworks that are iteratively generated by an algorithm built by the artist. These hard-edge color-fields are visual representations of the underlying code; their color juxtapositions provoke a long look that goes beyond seeing. The frame assists in this process as it emphasizes concentration akin to the design of a digital display. The mechanisms of production  code and silkscreen  fade away to present artworks of pure color projected onto a screen or laid on top of paper. In this way, the artist relates the allure of vivid, saturated ink to the mesmerizing glow of a digital display. Cooper is engaged with themes such as digital materiality and the phenomenological.

Alan Ki Aankhen by Fahad Karim

_Alan Ki Aankhen_ is an exploration of other-worldly cityscapes in the visual aesthetic of Fahads distinct style with pen and paper. The title, translated as _Alans Eyes_, alludes to Alan Turings machine intelligence test - a thought experiment foreshadowing a moment in which we can no longer differentiate between the real and the artificial. Though first proposed in 1950, the topic feels especially relevant today, as even our creative practices are being carried by shifting technological tides.

The algorithms and decision-making encoded into this generative art project intentionally imitate Fahads approach on traditional mediums - composition rules, textures, and overall themes. The visual elements are inspired by Fahads memories from his nomadic life. Youll find intricate windows from Rajasthan, massive Egyptian pyramids rising from the horizon, a density of civilization only seen in New York, and the moon - a comforting and shared sight no matter where you stand.

There are 8,999 Nuclear Nerds Comic Tokens, each upgradable to the latest Comic issue during that issue"s upgrade window. Doing so will change the display art of the Comic token to the cover art of that issue. Once upgraded, a Comic token cannot go backwards to a previous issue. Remember: the initial air-drop of the Comic token is attached to that token"s "parent" Nerd. If you sell your Nerd without "unpairing" your Comic, your Comic token will be sold with your Nerd.

Bright Moments

Pohualli is a 100 edition generative art project inspired by Aztec mythological motifs and the rich history of Mexico. The project reflects on the constant passage of time, the diverging paths into the future, and the desire to revisit and resurrect forgotten cultures. The title references the Nahuatl vigesimal counting system, in which pohualli is a base unit.

The concept for this project was first conceived by Fahad while he was living in Oaxaca de Jurez. Though many parts of Mexico have been drastically transformed, often forcibly, through colonization, a surge of tourism, and modernization, Oaxaca has managed to hold strong to many indigenous customs. Looking ahead to the next century - which elements of our cultures will we preserve and celebrate, and which will we erase from our memories?

Each artwork in the Pohualli collection takes the form of an alebrije-like creature that grows over time, following a random walk algorithm that represents our path through life. Every day the creatures will look slightly different, adding new feathers, shields, ribbons, vines, and geometric blocks to their forms. The Aztecs believed time to be cyclical, and so when a creature inevitably reaches its final day, it will die and be reborn.

Friendship Bracelets by Alexis Andr

Since founding Art Blocks in 2020, artist Erick Calderon (a.k.a. Snowfro) has been intrigued by the idea of representing digital artwork in the physical world in the form of an ephemeral physical object with meaning, but with no inherent value. 

Donald Judd has long been an inspiration for Art Blocks. One aspect we admire most about Judds artistic practice is the elegance of design he effortlessly paired with the accessibility of materials that could be found at a hardware store. With Judd as inspiration, we hatched a plan to create a unique generative art friendship bracelet that includes instructions to make, in minutes, a simple bracelet using a few dollars worth of embroidery floss. Donald Judd believed that what surrounds us in our day-to-day life is already so beautiful, and that ultimately the experience of creating art is as important as owning it.

Erick was incredibly excited to collaborate with renowned artist Alexis Andr (a.k.a. MacTuitui) to bring generative art and ephemeral physical objects together in the form of friendship bracelets. Conceptualized by Erick and aesthetically and programmatically designed by Alexis, this project pairs creative coding with a beautiful spectrum of embroidery floss colors. The project was a true team effort, as each member of the Art Blocks team designed and named their own color palette!

The project is a token of our appreciation to the creators, makers, builders, and collectors who have all contributed to making the Art Blocks community what it is today. Participating in this project is a signal, both online and IRL, that youre a participant in this evolution of art + community. You are pushing the best ideas forward. You are the reason all of these imaginative projects come to life. Our community is what makes all of this possible. So, to say it plainly, we appreciate you, and we hope that youll accept this bracelet as a token of our special friendship!
