Heybela Session _ 002 Ft Pete Rango

This is #HeybelaSessions 2/4 FT Pete Rango  

In this second freestyle, Colombian American producer Pete Rango wanted to challenge Heybela to rap over this upbeat experimental rhythm that combines the energy and colors of reggaeton, and the result was an overflow of rhymes in the best Latin style.

So after working with a publishing label that was treating me like I was a slave, I got stuck in form and this idea that songwriting has to be one way, I took some time to heal because I really couldnt write for months. To help, I decided to ride my bike to clear my head, and one day I envisioned myself rapping a verse on the L.A. River. And thats how Joyride came to life. 

Joyride is an evolving practice of free verses that are straight to it. No form, just me and me philosophies in bars. Its a meditation, its short bits of me, its whatever you want to make it. An opportunity to just allow myself to ride the beat. To create these verses, I would start with a beat I love, rap on it and then send the accapella to Kaui to create something new out of it.

Culture, this first offering/verse off of Joyride came to me after rapping on Kaytranadas production. I wrote the verse in a nite and immediately knew I didnt want to add much else to it. I am very lyrical and I am realizing, sometimes one verse is enough. Sometimes keeping it simple is all you need. Sometimes just riding your own path is what I have to do. 

So this year as Im riding my path, I guess Im using this Joyride as an exercise in getting back to me, getting out of my way, sticking to my journey, continuing to create with bro Kaui who has been working with me for years, Im really excited for how this ride will take me to more paths. A musical movement spearheaded by HeyBela, aimed at forging powerful collaborations with producers who bring their unique sound to challenge her to rap in different rhythms.

Inspired by the collaborative spirit of the old days on Soundcloud, I teamed up with 4 different producers to do these Freestyle sessions.

But this project is more than just about creating amazing music. HeyBela intends to use her share of the proceeds to finance the creation of her first album as an artist. This is her chance to make her mark on the world of music, and she"s inviting you to join her on this exciting journey.

Born in Rio Gallegos, Argentina, this multi-talented artist is a music producer, sound designer, and skilled musician with a passion for video game soundscapes. With 10 years of experience under their belt, they have collaborated with artists from diverse musical genres and helped bring exciting game worlds to life with their sonic wizardry.

I met him in the space, he was always supporting my music and he loved my way of rapping. When he showed me his beats i was blown away by the sheer talent and creativity behind his work. I knew in an instant that he had to be the first producer to collaborate with me on the #HeybelaSessions.

For my genesis Sound drop it was important to stay true to the essence. I couldve gone with another style of music but it was key for me to make history by sticking to the roots. When I first got into crypto in 2017, I noticed that the majority of the artists involved were in electronic music, a culture I was also a part of but I knew it would be an uphill battle to get Reggaeton recognition in the space. Fast-forward a few years and I accomplished everything I set out too in crypto/web3. (so far)

I made this song late 2021, I was on a hot streak knocking down about 3 records a night and SOLTERA was born. I needed a dope Reggaeton for the INFINXTE album and this was the one. The track is produced by two of my closest friends, Los Hitmen, a grammy-nominated production duo that have worked with heavyweights like J Balvin, Jay Wheeler, and De La Ghetto. I remember as soon as I sent the track I got a call back right away like WTF DID YOU DO HERE?! I knew right then we had a hit. 

The original artwork was crafted by one of my favorite artists from Spain, Diego (Paranoidme). I think one of the most exciting parts of my album is the diversity in collaborators, its completely organic and features artists from more than ten countries. Reggaeton was rejected in the mainstream for years and now its the voice of the youth all over Latin America, the Caribbean and people all over the world. Reggaeton pushes culture forward and I want to push it forward into web3.

Bela - 
A trip with friends will always be revealing. This song was born while I was on San Andrs island which is an island off the coast of Colombia known for its deep blue waters, warm weather and rich musical culture. This trip was about an escape, to get away from my thoughts and the people who appeared along the way made this trip something wonderful.

Xcelencia - 
I first learned about Bela promoting on Twitter which lead me to her OpenSea. As I went through her collection I noticed the versatility and knew right away she was a songwriter at heart. That definitely drew my attention since I worked on the publishing side of music for several years helping writers and producers. I collected one of the songs in the collection making it the first music NFT I purchased to support other Latin artists in the space.

We were talking about collaborating for some time and ISLA was the perfect song to start with. The Afrobeats inspired soundscape and the Rhodes driven chord progression set the tone for the song. This is one of those records where I effortlessly did my thing inspired by her writing and the production. This is the remix.

Mau Montekio is a trance producer in Mexico. He got connected to RAWRA through the incredible Alex Purdy. In fall of 2021, Mau and RAWRA collaborated to create what became "Collide," a trance pop ballad about how "tu media naranja" your "other half" might not really be it... It's the push and pull between wanting to be with someone who isn't for you and universe being like "let 'em go bb." 

Collide was written while RAWRA was a community engagement artist in residence at the Arthouse in Syracuse, NY. Last fall (2022), they wrapped on the Collide music video in collaboration with Schnell Mode, RedHouse Theater, The Little Room Art Gallery, and special thanks to American High,  -- stay tuned for a lot of oranges getting juicy ;)
