Painting with Fire presents a vignette of transformation: the evolution of GANs from 2014 - 2023 seen through the eyes of fire. Using 14 vintage GAN models, Ionson articulates the emergence of synthetic image generation. Ionson explores fire as the quintessence of humanity's relationship to both innovation and destruction, embracing the unexpected abstractions of classic AI as a distinctive aesthetic statement.

GAN (generative adversarial network) technologies were developed by researchers and programmers but then utilized by artists. Though the technology was invented to make the images as realistic as possible, Brd subverts this to use it chaotically and abstractly; the opposite of what the AI researchers had in mind. This project celebrates the innovators and artists who have brought synthetic image generation to life with models such as the aiCAN, DCGAN, Stylegan 1, 2 & 3, bigGan, biGAN, pix2pix, AttnGan and more.

A vivid burst of energy radiates from the core, where light and shadow intertwine in a dynamic display of warmth. The essence of a flame is captured in its primal state, its motion frozen yet embodying the fierce dance of fire's embrace. The luminous heart at the center is a beacon, an anchor of brightness in the fluid chaos of its surroundings.
Channeling the fire myths of the world, Prometheus, the Phoenix, the gods of the sun and flame. A story of technology brought to humans; to myths of destruction and rebirth. To be immortal; to be a god; it is always a paradox of fire and technology. The morality of the fire is always in question but we desire it and fear it. And yet it has changed us, we have learned so much since we first touched fire. We used it to destroy the wood, smelt the metal and build the chip. And now we teach and show the fire what we know; what we create and our reflection is there telling us our faults. The GAN is but a single neuron in a blazing star; a greater fire is coming.

Historically, carpets, miniature paintings, and decorative oriental patterns play a significant role in forming Azerbaijan's heritage and aesthetics. Although the Middle East comprises different carpet genres, they share similarities in geometric patterns, floral motifs, and calligraphic shapes. A significant cultural tradition alternates to digital culture and practices, bringing Mammadov's creative proposition to a global audience and considering how the clash of cultures, between the traditional and the digital, has greatly manifested in Mammadov's practice and encouraged innovation. By weaving all the data together, Mammadov invites the viewers to understand the significance of and similarities between Middle Eastern carpets and to recreate tangible-world cultures.

Muraqqa - Data Miniatures is an anthology of 111 artworks, created by Orkhan Mammadov to mark his transition from computer scientist to renowned artist over a decade. Drawing from his early dreams of animating miniature characters and his pivotal role in representing Azerbaijan at the 2019 Venice Biennale, this series breathes life into ancient miniatures, re-envisioning them as living memories of humanity through the lens of advanced technology.

The collection reimagines traditional miniature painting, a genre that once offered glimpses into vast narratives within compact frames, paralleling ancient storyboards. It serves as a bridge to the digital age, transforming intricate data into visual tales that echo the miniatures' fusion of calligraphy and imagery. Mammadovs foray into the realm of miniature painting reveals its 13th-century origins at the crossroads of Persian and Indian creativity, underscoring its pivotal role in cross-cultural exchange. His comprehensive analysis encompasses a vast dataset of miniatures from Azerbaijan, India, Iran, and Turkey, as well as treasures from the UNESCO-recognised St. Petersburg Muraqqa collection. These artworks, a showcase of the Mughal, Deccan, and Isfahan schools, created between the 16th and 18th centuries, intricately woven with scenes of royal life and Persian calligraphy, were once part of a looted treasure during Nadir Shahs invasion of India and later acquired for Tsar Nicholas II. This collection of 100 pieces embodies the transcultural spirit of miniature art and its enduring narrative of international exchangenow preserved at St. Petersburgs Institute of Oriental Manuscripts.

Clonism explores cloning as a common, everyday reality, a banality that is both near and distant. It diverges from the typical, grim, metallic clones by adopting a pastel pop aesthetic and offering a new visual language. This collection redefines perceptions of cloning in popular culture and science, distinguishing it from traditional representations.  
  
Both unsettling and absurd at the same time, the collection symbolizes the banality and redundancy of advanced technology. The pieces represent clones as mere products of consumer society rather than scientific marvels, seamlessly integrating into the mundane. It critiques consumer society and the trivialization of individuality through mass production, reflecting on a world where everything, even humanity, is commodified and disposable.  
  
The use of soft pastels contrasts against the eerie sterility of cloning technology, revealing an absurdity in existence. The color palette and the deadpan stillness highlight the non-functionality of the clones, evoking an artificiality. It"s as if we"ve become so adept at creating life that we"ve forgotten to imbue it with meaning.  
  
Alice Gordon is a raw AI maximalist. She is a part of the esteemed "Post Photographic Perspectives" artist roster curated by the Fellowship. She has gained recognition for her collections Disproportionate Anxiety and Cognitive Behaviour. She has a passion for the surrealist movement and calls her distinctive style absurdist surreal lonerism. Her art occupies the silent gaps in conscious thoughts, probing the quietest corners of existence and repression. Her creative process is a mixture of experimentation and spontaneity.
