Sister Cities of Asia by Noealz

I believe "The Grand Lisboa" is one of my top three photographs.  Initially, I had a variety of ideas that I wanted to do for animating this piece, but in the end,  I could not justify changing anything in this photograph.  

This image was shot in Macau, China during my one-night trip to the city. From Hong Kong, I took the ferry over to Macau for the evening, spending the entire night walking and taking photographs. I still recall the moment I came across the sight of The Grand Lisboa; it is a casino located in the middle of the city and looks like something from the future. I would love to continue exploring the world, looking for sights like these to share with others.

From the hard, bitter ground of the Phestia mountains, the people scraped and scratched at survival for generations. Until she emerged. Bursting forth from the white hot center of the Earth, Domina Ignis rose, bathed in flame and pulsing like magma. In her shining arms she brought  fire, chaos, and death. But when the smoke had cleared and the dust had settled, life had sprung from the fertilized rock. A city was built around the blaze, and the people learned to revere and trust Domina Ignis and her powerful gifts. With each eruption, they learned to weather her wrath with cunning and ingenuity, waiting for the harvest that followed her blazing rain. But the problem with aligning with the Lady of Fiery Temper: eventually everyone burns.

Through the trees youll find it. Nestled in the thicket, far removed from the industry of modern life, Cedden slumbers in the overgrowth. A city built in tandem with the natural order of the forest rather than against it, the city stretches out like vines along the wide-trunked conifers and leafy canopies. The people of Cedden thrived on the bounty of the earth; their steps careful, their hands gentle. They made sure to keep their impact as soft as possible, in deference to the Lady of the Trees, Domina Terrae, and all she provided for them. They considered themselves merely guests on the boundless stretch of garden that they called home. As the years went on, the earth began to slowly reclaim everything Cedden had so carefully built. Even when you try your best to work in congruence with nature, there will come a reckoning. Nature is wild, and hides within its peace a silent chaos. The branches close around them, the leaves suffocate the light from their eyes. The earth devours them, bringing them back to the twisted harmony of the wilderness. Some lament the tranquil destruction of Cedden, and all the things theyd built there. But the wise no to ask, was it ever really theirs?

They saw her one day, on the shores of their fledgling empire, breached on the shallows of the mighty ocean. She dove through the water like a jetstream, her pearlescent, seafoam body draped in fine silk and crowned with studded gems. She called to them, and they answered. The people of Sapphalba pursued their new queen to the deepest parts of the ocean, retrieving riches they could never have imagined. Her mirthful laugh cut through them like a wave, infecting them with her cavalier, adventurous spirit. The city spread further out onto the water, using all the tricks they could afford to stay afloat as they loaded their streets with treasure. Domina Aquae smiled as she watched the city sink deeper and deeper under the weight of their opulence. Once the city was completely submerged, she would claim the massive glittering jewel of Sapphalba all for herself.

Citizens of Cedden fled the loud and angry sounds of the progressing world in search of peace. Within the forest of Terrae they found her, sleeping hazily on the roots of an ancient tree. Domia Terrae stretched forth, letting her limbs entwine with the nature around her, and her people followed suit. Bedecked in flowers and twigs, she watched them build a paradise of the forest, always taking heed of their surroundings, to build in tandem with the natural growth of the earth. Never against, never in opposition. Though she smiled and approved, she never lifted a finger to help, and they loved her for it. But, much like Domina Terrae, the Earth itself is indifferent to the struggles of its inhabitants, and will swallow them up without a second thought.
