About the image: When the desert calls, I answer. The desert of Wadi Rum in southern Jordan is where my soul is from, Im sure of it. In this Mars-like terrain, nature is cruel and people are generous. Ive been fortunate to become friends with the Bedouin community living and working inside this desert, to share their stories. The air here has a special quality. The stillness is soothing. The scale of the landscape is humbling. This is where one goes if one feels the need to be moved. The 4x4 trucks and the camels are just about the only thing you will see roaming across the desert. This particular image was captured from atop a sandstone mountain, much like the ones included in the frame. As the darkness fell, I joined my friends for a round of Bedouin whiskey: tea with maramiyah, otherwise known as sage.

About the artist: Yulia Denisyuk is an award-winning travel photographer and writer working on assignments with various publications around the world. For past work, shes shared a roof with nomads in Mongolia and documented Iznik tile artisans in Turkey.
