BEFORE the SETTING SUNS - Chapter 1 (Cont....)

She allowed the tired Magnolia to rest while she unpacked, carefully storing what food they had under a pile of large leaves. It kept the fairies from stealing the food supply or so told by Masgon. Whatever trouble bestowed upon his way, she masked her tension with a fake smile when corresponding with her daughter. 

Esi cleared a small round ditch in the dirt and placed a pile of sticks in the middle. With two stones in her hand, she buffed the tops together as Masgon instructed her in the days before Magnolias birth. Things were much the same except her hair flowed past her waist and his dark beard fell on his chest. Kisses were much smoother then. 
She sighed as a spark traveled from the rock and extinguished. She threw herself down. 

Silence

No fireplace crackling. 
No supper stewing. 

Silence

No Magnolia playing on the wooden floors. 
No one performing music nor singing songs.

Silence
Nothing but the same emptiness as when Masgon went on his hunting journeys. Confident enough to hold the house, yes, but not strong enough to entertain her own mind. 

Silence

Three slow popping clicks, followed by seven fast ones came from the left side somewhere in the trees. The sound was distant, yet nearby as if something were moving among the treetops. She held her breath to listen and cuffed Magnolias mouth with her hand. Three more clicks and then... 

Silence

There was a rustling sound directly behind her about five feet away. She heard a flutter then three more clicks. 
"Mother.." Magnolia whispered, her voice slightly panicky.
A branch broke directly behind her head. She could hear breathing so close that she swore it touched her ear and to her nose with the smell of rotten berries. 

Silence

What did it want? She wondered. She jumped as the creature fluttered off after a loud thump cracking and breaking through the treetops.  
"I do not think they mean harm. A deep sigh rushed from her lips. Your father says they are more curious than harmful.

Where are we? 

I am not sure.

Why are we here?

Such a curious young child for being only five, are you not? She swept Magnolias hair out of her eyes. I am unsure why we are here but we must do what your father asks of us and wait.

If we are lost in the woods can the Witchard find us?

Of course they can. smiled Esi. She laid out the beblar cloth and rolled up two handfuls of clothes at one end. Now lay your head down and let us sleep for the night.

Magnolia looked around hesitantly at the treetops.

Would you like me to tell you the story of the Witchard? 

Magnolia nodded her head. 

Lay down and rest. She motioned towards the roll of clothes. 

Two and five centuries ago, there was a small boy about your age who lived not too far from here in the mainland of Trimon that surrounded the castle walls.

Inkabez!

Yes, he is Inkabez but in the past he was known as Larmar, the name his good mother gave him. This boy was curious and his curiosity held the best of him at many times. When the townspeople were preoccupied with festivals, Larmar would sneak into the Sherrian Forest and imagine the grandest adventures of being an honorable knight for the king. 
One day, Larmar adventured farther, farther into the forest than any other Trimonite had ever dared to explore.

And that is when he saw it? Magnolia yawned.
