TERRA FLAMMA

The Atlas Fire burns in eastern Napa County October 2017 during the 2017 Wine Country Fire Siege. This blaze was threatening a vineyard over a century old, and was largely saved by the efforts of the El Dorado Hotshots US Forest Service wildland firefighters. 

I drove 8 hours over 500 miles straight from Southern California directly into the fire. One minute I rounded a corner on the highway in the valley and it went from tranquil night sky to wall of fire behind the vines. This fire shows the geographic scale of the blaze and the resources that were at risk and impacted during the fire siege. The green on the vines are turned yellow but accidental light painting from the special yellow driving lights I use at fires to help safely navigate through the smoke. 

This image was featured in WIRED Magazine and kicked off a week of intensive wildfire coverage.
