At that point she appears, the first being to brave the empty sky." D. Wolkstein. In Norse mythology, Hel was the name of the goddess of death. She was one of the children of the trickster god Loki. Her kingdom was said to lie in the north (the direction of the underworld in some worldviews like Egypt, and also the side of church grounds that cemeteries are placed). Her kingdom was called "The World of Darkness" in ancient Norse, and her name means "the hidden." Both could be linked to her role as the one who governs the underworld, which was dark and hidden underneath. It was said that those who fell in battle did not go to Hell but to the god Odin in Valhalla (or the equivalent of Heaven, albeit very different), the hall of the slain.
