In 2005, artist Matt Furie created the comic series Boy"s Club, which stars the teenage monster characters Pepe, Brett, Andy and Landwolf. But Pepe first became truly famous as a frog meme via the imageboard 4chan, which took on the green fellow and his exaggerated facial expressions as a reaction image. In 2008, the image of Pepe urinating and saying the words "feels good man" with a visibly relieved expression on his face was shared here first.  
Within a very short time, countless variations and completely original creations of the character were created, which gradually spread to other Internet platforms, image boards and forums. Until 2014, however, the popularity of the meme was still limited. With the increasing spread of Pepe on social networks and blogs such as tumblr, Instagram, Facebook & Co., almost everyone soon knew the green frog with his bedroom eyes.
