It was first depicted in 1781 by Toriyama Sekien in "Konjaku Hyakki Shuui" . It is said that people may have been inspired by the YOKAI of smoke when they saw a human face-like figure floating in the smoke rising from a kamado or bathtub. It is also believed that only those who have the presence of mind to gaze at the smoke absentmindedly, or those with beautiful minds, can see the smoke.
