One Night in August is a collection containing three phases that encapsulate different stages of a healing journey. This collection tells a story of where I've been, the emotions I've processed, and my reflections on growth and change. Art has been a massive tool in my emotional regulation over the years, and I truly believe art is therapeutic. If interested, take time to read each description of this collection to better tell my story with emotional turmoils, taking action, and reflection. At the minimum, this is a collection of cool art for you to enjoy. 

Phase One tells the story of rising and unruly emotions. 
Phase Two illustrates the process of healing. 
Phase Three is all about the reflection  its the art made from the metaphorical emotional summit.

It's 2014 and I'm sitting in my basement apartment. I'm not crying because I'm high, but I don't know if any tears could come out anyway. But everything feels numb. Nothing feels like it can touch me because I've retreated so far into my corner and all I want to do is protect myself. In that moment, I truly had no idea how good life could get.

So help me GOD. It"s 2021 and I"m feeling majorly frustrated with my computer. It keeps crashing! It doesn"t have any storage. It"s not doing what I need it to do, and sadly I"m not in a position to change it. I couldn"t even make art for a bit because it would just crash. Suddenly, I get some hope that maybe it"ll work again. I want to make art but have no means to do it. I need something to work -- a foxhole prayer at least. Then finally, as I"m saving, So Help Me God, 2021 -- it works.

Sometimes I feel like I'm not enough, but I've never been explicitly told that. Why do I believe it? What force or thought drives me - convinces me - that I'm not enough. This overwhelming and sometimes bitter thought can consume my thoughts, and quickly. It's important for me to remember that thoughts of inadequacy are simply that: thoughts. Not truth; not real -- just a thought. My feelings are not facts, they hold no true weight. This piece was made to help me let go of thoughts of inadequacy, and let myself start to believe that I am enough.

There's something special about being able to recall a painful moment in gratitude because it allowed the present to happen. All of the recklessness, emotional instability, and fear led me to the present and I couldn't be happier. It wasn't easy to get through, to be honest it really sucked, but making art about it that recalls those emotions and settings to finally put them to rest is beyond powerful.

For years I thought I took up too much space. I thought I was too tall, too loud, too smart, too intense. I didn't think that I was allowed to be exactly how I was, and I never thought that other people could have been wrong for wanting me to shrink to a level they could reason with. Through my inadequacy I met my apathy, where I regularly dreamed of what life would be like if I wasn't around. In that moment it made more sense to me to imagine the world without me.

Heartbreak sucks and in time we'll all experience it. The intense feeling of rejection and inadequacy for the first time is quite literally unmatched because we have nothing else to compare it to. But sometimes recalling these moments in the present has helped me see that I am safe, it is okay now, and there's no need for the morbid reflection of the past.

'We've been living in the dark but don't you see there's a light?' In the throes of the pandemic, the Dark felt all encompassing and the Light was hard to find. There was no real end in sight, the two week vacation everyone was talking about was very much not a reality, and the looming monotony of staying at home every day was truly starting to set in. Through all of this, I was still determined to find the light. With a muse handy and on repeat, this piece was created through an invigorated sprit with a fierce determination to keep going.

Rage often feels like heat all over me with a pulse of energy in my hands. I always get adrenaline rushes in my hands. I made this piece while trying to process being powerless over a situation that still affected my life, feeling angry with the power struggle I didn't ask to be a part of.

"Your new life is going to cost your old one" is a quote we've all probably heard, but it's so exhilarating to experience. Setting boundaries and subsequently losing friends, putting your needs first, healing from generational trauma, and welcoming pain are all coupled with this dehabilitating fear that something is terribly wrong -- and it is, for the past self. At the end of the day, don't be fooled by your emptiness -- there's so much more room for happiness.

It's 2013 and I'm at a rave with my friends. The neon-and-shutter shades phase has ended, you can find a few people with furry boots and kandi, but the feeling is still the same. People are happy to see each other and the music is blaring. Everyone seems happy, and in that moment they probably are. I chased that feeling like a dragon.

People always say 'the grass is greener on the other side' but is it? Oftentimes I find that it isn't, or somethings wrong with the other grass. It's important for me to find balance and stay centered within myself so I can see that my grass is quite alright. The minute I go looking in other yards I start to feel off balance but there's no need for that.

My parliaments on fire and my hands are up -- when I moved to the west coast in 2018, I immediately knew it was different from life I experienced before. Everything felt different on the west coast. The scenery was fascinating, the flora was nothing like I had ever seen; the people were different and the culture was incredible. I quickly wrapped my head around half day Fridays and generally not taking life too seriously. I'm incredibly grateful for the changes and unlearning that the west coast has given me.

Spring of 2020 was a hard time for me, I had no idea where my career was going because of the pandemic, I couldn't really go outside or do anything because no one knew if it was safe, and things really started to feel like a tunnel without an end in sight. I often find that jellyfish represent omens or demons, bad habits and fears. I like to honor them in my art by coexisting with them peacefully; they remind me that good can still come while things are scary.

I find that peace is hard to achieve. A self-described perfectionist and workaholic, I rarely value rest and slowing down. The more I can do the more I want to do -- an endless cycle of seeking self fulfillment and productivity. But sometimes I'll seek out calm moments of tranquility. I think that I get pushed to that place and it's not something I do willingly, but its always nice to get there. Being calm is often the best fuel I can have to lead a hectic life.

Nobody's son, nobody's daughter... Do you ever feel like you know what's going to happen in the future, but you don't know how you're going to get there? Early 2021 was an emotional whirlwind for me, and I often felt overwhelmed but determined to find peace. The most valuable thing I learned in that time was how to be at peace in my solitude. Being your own best friend is a superpower - your self esteem becomes unshakable when you truly know who you are.

Boundaries are not about creating distance, they're about giving the people we love guidelines about how we want them to love us. Without boundaries, my life becomes a constant cycle of being the victim and rescuing others -- I do things because I feel like I don't have a choice, and then I get mad about feeling powerless and do things to feel vindicated. With boundaries I can see there's no need for that cycle. All I need to do is tell people what I need in a loving way and watch their response. What they do with my boundaries is never my responsibility.
